There are some great trading blogs out there these days and the number of bloggers seems to be rapidly expanding. There are a few bloggers who I read on a regular basis. These guys are the crème de le crème of option bloggers who provide great market analysis, trade ideas and educational posts. I wanted to put together this list of the Top 10 Option Trading Bloggers as a resource for other traders to use. Some of these guys you may have heard of, some may be new to you. I’ve created the list based on a variety of factors including how helpful I find their blogs and their overall popularity. Check them out and let me know if you think I’ve missed anyone. Most of these guys are on Twitter and I’ve set up a list where you can follow them.
1 – Option Pit – Mark Sebastien
Option Pit is run by Mark Sebastian, a former market maker on both the Chicago Board Options Exchange and the American Stock Exchange. Option Pit is a fantastic resource for option traders and blog topics focus a lot on implied volatility, so you can understand why I like it. One of the great things about Option Pit is there is new content pretty much every day and it is ALL high quality stuff. Mark is also a regular on CNBC. I visit this site every day.
2 – Options Hawk – Joe Kunkle
Options Hawk is another options trading site that has a large focus on trading implied volatility. Joe Kunkle is the man behind the Options Hawk brand and while he doesn’t post on his blog as regularly as some others in this list, when he does post it is all super informative stuff with lots of actionable trade ideas. He is very responsive if you have questions, but don’t take that as a license to bombard him with questions.
3 – Condor Options – Jared Woodard
Jared Woodard of Condor Options is on a whole different level when it comes to intelligence. I have to pull out a dictionary at least once when reading a new blog post of his. Funny thing is, as much as he is a master of the English language, it’s numbers that are his forte. His statistical analysis and dissection of option market volatility really is a beauty to behold. He was the co-founder of Expiring Monthly: The Option Trader’s Journal which is the collaborative effort of Jared’s and two of the other people on this list funnily enough. I guess you should go out and subscribe.
Mark Lexus is a self-professed low carb eating, gym junkie option trader. If you can managed to not be distracted by his frequently updated avatars, you will find many nuggets of information and trade ideas in his blog. He shares a lot of his trades including his reasons for entry and plan for managing each trade. He mostly trades credits spreads and diagonals.
5 – Crap Trader – Crap Trader
Crap Trader is fairly new on the option blogging scene, but has managed to rise up the ranks quickly. I do love his tagline – Trying not to trade like crap. He posts a lot of his live trades on his blog and provides a detailed post mortem on some of them. Tends to trade some naked positions in addition to his standard credit spreads and diagonals.
6 – The Lazy Trader – Lazy Trader
The Lazy Trader is a super nice guy. His blog is filled with trading related tips on subjects like psychology, money management and risk management. He also posts his trades on the site and gives an update on how they are performing each weekend. He focuses mostly on credit spreads and iron condors but also has lots of information on other strategies. I did a guest post for the Lazy Trader once which you can check out here.
7 – Option Alpha – Kirk Du Plessis
Kirk from Option Alpha is the go to guy for beginners wanting to learn options trading. His blog archive and resource section are extensive and filled with interesting tidbits. He trades purely credit spreads, iron condors and naked puts and calls.
8 – The Option Premium Blog – Drew
Selling Theta is another new name in the option blog scene, but it has already developed a devoted following. The weekly updates manage to break complex concepts down into easy to digest and actionable ideas. Live trades are also posted on the site and updated regularly. Got married recently to the lovely Angela and had their honeymoon in Cayman and it was great to be able to catch up.
Racer Nic is another credit spread and iron condor trader who focuses on the major indexes and stocks like AAPL. He posts some of his trades on his blog as a teaching tool and provides trade analysis and review. Racer Nic keeps it pretty light hearted with a few jokes thrown in occasionally and is a blog definitely worthy of following.
10 – Strangle Profits – Strangle Profits
Strangle Profits is another option blog that is quite new on the scene having only started in June 2012, but has been rapidly rising up the ranks. This crossfit junkie and father of 4 year old twins (omg that sounds like hard work…) trades naked calls and puts with an aim of making 2-3% per month. While not necessarily my trading style (too risky for me), it’s interesting to see how other traders go about their craft.
11 – VIX and More – Bill Luby
Sorry, I had to add one more in at the last minute as I didn’t feel this list was complete without this blog and I couldn’t bring myself to kick out any of the ones rated 1-10. VIX and More is run by Bill Luby and is the go to resource for all things VIX related. I’ve learned a great deal from the posts I’ve read so far and can’t wait to dive into the rest of them!
So those are my Top 11 Option Trading Blogs, I’m sure this will create quite a bit of controversy similar to my Top 25 Traders on Twitter post. Feel free to let me know in the comments section if you think I missed anyone.
Please remember to share this post on Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus using the buttons on the left. Remember to check back to the blog regularly over the next few weeks as I will be announcing a reader contest with loads of cool giveaways soon.
